I’d like to think I got my love for music from my dad. You see my dad, ……my dad is one of the most knowledgeable individuals I’ve ever met, and I’m not just saying that because he’s my dad. I mean, this guy knows everything about everything. And that’s something I’ve always admired about him. And sometimes I’m left speechless, like, “How the hell does my dad know all of this”? Ever since I could remember, one thing I always noticed was that my dad always turned to music for every occasion, whether it was him unwinding down in the garage or backyard listening to Elvis on full blast, to being the master controller of the radio during our family trips and ALWAYS tuning in to K-Earth 101! Of course, when I was younger I hated it because as a 9 year old what I wanted to listen to went a little something like "Oops! I did it again, I played with your heart got lost in the game!” (Britney Spears) and a little less like, “Strangers in the night, exchanging glances wondering in the night..." (Strangers in the Night by Frank Sinatra).
I mean my dad can talk to you about any artists from The Beatles, Marvin Gaye, Frank Sinatra, Smokey Robinson, Eagles, Prince, Stevie Wonder, Peter Frampton, The Temptations, Eric Clapton, The Supremes, Tom Petty, Mana, Andrea Bocelli, Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson down to every Hispanic/Latino musician out there. Every genre, Spanish or English, HE knows it ALL. Shit, he can even give you an elaborate story about how that song was created and a complete biography on the artist, resources and all. You see, during his twenties, my dad played in a band with a couple of friends. He was the lead singer but also found himself playing the drums once in a while. He played at mini concerts and toured in his area, lol, I guess you can say my dad lived that rock star life. LOL. No, but jokes aside, music runs through my dad’s veins. He’s always singing, whistling or playing some kind of imaginary instrument while he drives during a red light. When I was younger my dad bought a full set of drums. They were black, shiny and loud. I fondly remember my dad and brothers playing the drums and me all up in the mix trying to learn, or joining along with the güiro or cowbell. Believe me when I say, WE were the original garage band. It’s no wonder I love music that has a sickass instrumental beat or some bad ass drums playing. Why else do you think I have and obsession with The Beatles & Caribbean music? Lol
I’ve come to find that I enjoy listening to Spanish music sometimes even more than English. I don’t know, but I feel like Spanish music beautifully captures those feelings that are sometimes inexplicable. My family knows me as the person who is always jamming out in her room, blasting everything from banda to salsa. The running joke in my family (thanks to my brother Beto) is “Oh mom, did you know Wendy is ‘Salvi’, cause she plays nothing but cumbias” or “Mom, did you know she’s Rastafarian cause she plays reggae” lol. Whether they enjoyed it or not, I gave them free concerts on a daily basis. When I moved to New York one of the first things my mom said to me was “the house is so quiet now, I don’t hear music playing from your room anymore, I miss it”. I knew she low-key enjoyed my jam sessions even though she always told me to turn it down! Music basically is my coping tool for EVERYTHING! Happy, depressed or anxious, listening to music will always get me in a good mood. It's also what's kept me alive in NYC! lol
Y'all I have a playlist for basically everything. Every genre, every occasion, every mood. You name it, I have a playlist, so if you're ever in need of a DJ, hit me up... I take food as payment. But, I will be honest and say I could make you a mean ass “Oldie’s but Goodies” playlist on Spotify but could not name you the latest hottest artist out there lol. Hip-hop/rap I love & enjoy, I mean J.Cole, Drake, JayZ/Kanye's "Watch the Throne" album and my girl Rih basically helped make it through undergrad, but NOW, I've kinda fallen off the train. I'd like to think its because I only listen to my playlists on Spotify so in a sense I've kind of sheltered myself. There’s a reason why I could not tell you if Migos is one or two people... or wait is Migos short for Los 3 Amigos?? OMG, did I just have an epiphany?!
Anyway, in honor of my dad LOVING music, I decided to create a "Music Challenge" video with my dad to test his skillzzz. I made a playlist with 30 songs ranging in genre, artist and language. He of course only missed one out of the 30! We had a blast making this video, my dad was super into it! lol
